Texcel Monitors AS 2187.2-2006 Compliance

  • October 10, 2022

Texcel monitors compliance with the latest Australian Standard for Blast Monitoring

Australian Standards for Blast Monitoring

AS 2187.2 is entitled “Explosives – Storage and use – Part 2: Use of explosives” and contains the Australian Standards for Blast Monitoring.

The recommendations relating to Blast Monitoring equipment and Blast Monitoring processes are found in Appendix J – GROUND VIBRATION AND AIRBLAST OVERPRESSURE.

AS 2187 was first released in 1993, and updated in 2006.

Updates in AS2187.2 – 2006

AS 2187.2-2006 Explosives – Storage and use – Use of explosives was released on 2nd February 2006.
Among the major changes identified were “Significant changes to ground vibration and airblast overpressure assessment.”
Specifically:
Section J4.2.1 Ground Vibration Measuring Equipment states:
“The frequency range of the measurement equipment shall be at least 2 Hz to 250 Hz (−3 dB roll off), with a tolerance of 10% over this frequency range.”
This is qualified by:
“The use of equipment with a frequency response range of 5 to 250 Hz, which was specified in AS 2187.2—1993, should be permitted in the vast majority of situations where this frequency range is adequate.”
Also
“For a digital system, the recommended minimum sampling frequency is 500 Hz.”
Section J4.3.1 Airblast Measuring Equipment states:
“The frequency range of the measurement equipment shall be at least 2 Hz to 250 Hz (−3 dB roll off), with a tolerance of ±1 dBL over this frequency range. For a digital system, the recommended minimum sampling frequency is 500 Hz.”

Texcel Monitor Compliance

All Texcel monitors, when using the Texcel supplied ‘Blast Settings’ (‘Compliance’ style in EasyLink), comply with (and exceed) the Measuring Equipment requirements of AS 2187.2-2006.

All Texcel monitors delivered before 2nd February 2006 comply with (and exceed) the Measuring Equipment requirements of AS 2187.2-1993, when using the Texcel supplied ‘Compliance’ style ‘Blast Settings’.

Use of Custom Settings in T-Link (or EasyLink) will not break this compliance as long as the correct sensors are selected (calibrated within 12 months – Section J 3.1.2), the sample rate is greater than or equal to 500 Hz, and the trigger levels and waveform length ensure you capture the entire blast.

To use Custom Settings for blast monitoring, Texcel recommends you understand and follow all of Section J 3.1.2 – Typical blast monitoring guidelines.
